Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Clearly Masonry or Freemasonry, and in particular Freemasonry in Uruguay, and even more precisely the Masonic Lodge "Gran Oriente de Uruguay", whose 25th Anniversary is honoured with this issue.

Freemasonry is a Fraternal Organisation that traces its origins to the local fraternities of Stonemasons, which from the end of the XIV Century regulated the qualifications of Stonemasons and their interaction with authorities and clients. Masons are members of the organization. The degrees of Freemasonry, its gradal system, retain the three grades of medieval craft guilds, those of Apprentice, journeyman or fellow (now called Fellowcraft), and Master Mason. These are the degrees offered by craft, or blue lodge Freemasonry. There are additional degrees, which vary with locality and jurisdiction, and are now administered by different bodies than the craft degrees.

The basic, local organisational unit of Freemasonry is the Lodge. The Lodges are usually supervised and governed at the regional level (usually coterminous with either a state, province, or national border) by a Grand Lodge or Grand Orient. There is no international, world-wide Grand Lodge that supervises all of Freemasonry. Each Grand Lodge is independent, and they do not necessarily recognise each other.

Then, the desing of the Issue is divided in three clearly defined components, two of them sharing the foreground, that are the kind of Coin that is shown at right, and the Sculpture at Left, over a background of a Chess board like Floor Tiles with three different Columns over it, and a full of Stars Sky behind them.

The Coin brings obviously Numismatic Topic to the Release, also Metals and Minerals, in particular Gold, as the most probable Material in which the Coin is made. Then, from the elements in the Coin, clearly the Square and Compass, main Symbols of the Freemasonry, and also Tools of Measurement and Construction. Also the inscription of "Libertad, Igualdad, Fraternidad" included in the Coin, refers to the French Phrase "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité" from the French Revolution, so there is here a link to the France as a Country, and to Democracy, Republicanism, and Liberalism Ideologies.

Then, the Sculpture, besides bringing Art to the Topics of the Issue, it also brings Work, as it is the Topic of the Scuplture, and also Marble, because of the Material in which it was made, and even the Sculptor Angel Ferrari Rocca as the Artist who made the Sculpture that is shown in the Stamp.

Finally, the background of the Stamp links the Release to Architecture by the Columns, to Astronomy or Space, through the Stars and Sky, and Chess because of the Chessboard like Tiles.

TOPIC STUDY - #0001 - CHINESE CALENDAR - URUGUAY

Chinese Calendar - Uruguay PreviousNext )

Topic Description:

The Chinese Calendar is a Lunisolar Calendar which arranges the year, month and day number upon the astronomical date. It is used for traditional activities in China and Overseas Chinese communities. It determines the date for the Chinese traditional holidays, and instructs Chinese people in selecting the Lucky Day of a Wedding or Funeral, for Opening a venture, or a Relocation.

In the Chinese Calendar, the Days begin at midnight and end at midnight of the next day. The Months begin on the day with the dark (new) moon and end on the day before the next dark moon. The Years begin on the day with the dark moon near the Vernal Commences. The Solar Terms are the important components of the Chinese calendar. There are one or two, and occasionally three, solar terms within a month.

The present Chinese Calendar is the product of evolution. Many Astronomical and Seasonal Factors were added by Ancient Scientists, and people can reckon the date of natural phenomena such as the moon phase and tide upon the Chinese calendar. The Chinese calendar has over 100 versions, and the characteristics of these versions reflect the evolutionary route of the Chinese calendar. Like Chinese characters, these versions of Chinese Calendar is adopted throughout the Sinosphere. In Korea, Vietnam, and the Ryukyu Islands, the Chinese Calendar was adopted completely. In Japan, the Chinese calendar was used before the Edo period, and the later Japanese calendar used the Algorithm of the Chinese calendar.

The Chinese Calendar is not the official calendar in China (see Minguo calendar for post-1912 History), but plays an important role there. The official name of the Chinese calendar is the Rural Calendar, but people often refer to the Chinese calendar with other names, such as the Former Calendar, the Traditional Calendar, or the Yin Calendar.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: The Chinese Horoscope, or Chinese Zodiac, that is based on the Chinese Calendar, and in particular his Year of the Goat or Year of the Sheep, depending on the region in which the Calendar is used, then, even more particularly, and although not specified in the issue, The Year of the Water Goat, is the one celebrated in this Release.

Also, surrounding Chinese Horoscope and Chinese Calendar many Topics arises. Clearly Astrology. Then, from general to particular, Measuring Systems, Time Measuring Systems, and Calendars. Also, perhaps the more abstract Time itself too. And, of course China as the country, or more in general the Eastern Culture.

Now, looking at the desing of the Issue, it is clear that The Goat, in particular from a wider Farm Animals, Animals or Fauna, is the most relevant topic of the issue. Then Space, Astronomy, or even Stars could be another Topics, as the background selected for the stamp is a Night Sky full of Stars. Finally, Photography, could be added too, as both the Goat at foreground and the Sky at background seems to be extracted from Photographies, and not from Paintings.

Then, the First day Cancelation adds another topic by his design, that is Chinese Characterers, as these Characters are not usual to see them in stamps from western culture countries.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.

It is clear that The Horse, in particular from a wider Farm Animals, Animals or Fauna, is another relevant topic of the issue too, however is barely approached by the desing of the Issue through the Horseshoe Footprint that took almost all the Stamp design. Then, following this line of the release design, Horseshoe could put the Release in Blacksmith Topic, and even Steel, Metals, and Minerals ones, and then Footprint could lead us to Detective Topics too.

Now, another peculiarity from the desing of this release, is the naive way of linking the Lunar Calendar with the Picture of the Lunar Soil even with the Footprint of the Step from the Astronaut at bottom slightly to the left. Although probably controversial the design decision that was made, the result is that it make that this release fit in Space, Astronomy, Moon, Space Flights, Flight to the Moon, Apolo 11, and NASA Collections.

Finally, just add that, neither the Block nor the First day Cancelation, adds Topics to the release.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: The Philatelic Exhibitions and Numismatic Exhibitions in general, and in particular International Stamp and Coin Exhibition, Shanghai '97, as this is the Exhibition that this release is about. Finally, a more comprenhensive Topics are clearly Philately and Numismatic itself.

Then, surrounding the International Stamp and Coin Exhibition mentioned, Shanghai City could be a Topic too, that adds People's Republic of China Country also, and even a Shanhgai International Philatelic Exhibitions Topic.

Now, looking at the desing of the Issue, many Topics arises, some in a way related with Shanghai City and People's Republic of China Country, like The Dragon that leads to a wider Mythological Animals Topic, then The Flower, probably a particular one, however I did not now which it is, and finally the Chinese Calendar appears, in particular the Year of the Ox, and related with this Zodiac AnimalFarm Animals, Mammals, and Fauna Topics became included in this Relesase. These three items appears just only on the bottom margin of both Blocks.

Then, also in both Blocks margins, this time at top, the International Stamp and Coin Exhibition, Shanghai '97 Logotype is included, however, I am not sure which isthe content or meaning of it, probably a Bell or a Gate, and besides that the Coat of Arms of Uruguay is included too, as in many Uruguayan Blocks of that epoch, giving the realease, not only the Coat of Arms Topic, that also all the Topics that Uruguayan Coat of Arms includes, that are: Lighthouses, Hills, Horses, Cows, Animals, Scales, Weight Measuring Systems, and Measuring Systems.

Issue:

This block of a single stamp was issued in commemoration of the 25th U.P.U. Congress that was taking place in Doha, the capital city of Qatar, at the day of it issue, as the congress extrends from September 24th, to October 15th, of 2012..

In the congress took part over 1.500 participants, from the 192 countries members of U.P.U.

The topic for this Congress was: "New world, new strategy", that refers to the great changes in the current postal industry, and the needs of the post office from all the world to adapt to this new scenario. In our digital era, from one side much of the traditional mail is replaced by email, however, in from the other side, digital communications expanded commercial activity which generates more traditional mail needs.

The main result of the Congress was a request from it to the goverments of the 192 countries that integrate that union that adopt the "Postal Strategy of Doha", and define a postal service map for the next four years, that result in the improvement of it quality.

This congress of U.P.U. are held periodically every four years. The first of them took place in Bern, Switzerland, in 1874, and previously to the once commemorated in this issue, was also located in Switzerland, however, not in Bern, it was held by the city of Geneva.

The Universal Postal Union (UPU, French: Union postale universelle) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that coordinates postal policies among member nations, in addition to the worldwide postal system..

The UPU’s headquarters are located in Bern, Switzerland.

Prior to the establishment of the UPU, each country had to prepare a separate postal treaty with other nations it wished to carry international mail to or from. To simplify the complexity of this system, the United States called for an International Postal Congress in 1863. This led Heinrich von Stephan, Royal Prussian and later German Minister for Posts, to found the Universal Postal Union.

The UPU was created in 1874, initially under the name "General Postal Union", as a result of the Treaty of Bern signed on October 9, 1874. Four years later, the name was changed to "Universal Postal Union".

After the foundation of the United Nations, the UPU became a specialized agency of the UN in 1948.

As usual in stamps related with U.P.U., there is the logo of U.P.U., or more precisely a mix of both offical logos or flags. This mix is composed by the classic five people of different cultures giving envelopes one to each other around a sphere that symbolizes the world, surrounded by what it seems to be a laurel crown.

However, the main object in the stamp is a representation of the Fanar, the largest mosque in Qatar, and a prominent landmark of Doha.

Also interesting from this building is that his name "Fanar" means lighthouse. And it seeks as it, to bring light, to show to the humanity the commandments and traditions of islamic religion.

Although that almost all the building is represented by a compositions of envelopes, the minaret of the mosque is shown exaclty as it is, and over a beautiful yellow full moon, in a full of star night sky.

The design of the stamp is completed with the names of Fanar, Doha, and Qatar, both in spanish and Arabic languages. This need confirmation, for Doha and Qatar seems clear, however, for Fanar, the translation difer. Another interesting issue about this, is the right to left orientation of Arabic language it could be seen in the "Doha - Qatar" segment.

Finally, there is what it seems to be a printing error, shown as a black line by the 'Y' letter of Uruguay. There is not a variation in one stamp as it is seen in all stamps known, however, it is not understood it appearence in the aesthetic of the stamp.

Block:

The design of the block adds the image of the Clock Tower, another landmark of Doha, the capital of Qatar.

The Clock Tower is located next to the Grand Mosque, this old clock tower features Arabic numerals on its face, and as is located on a hill, offers some wonderful views of the Corniche.

The design of the block is completed with the logo of the uruguayan post office, with his rising sun over waters.

FDC:

For this issue a special cover was made, using the same representation that is shown in the stamp, of Fanar grand mosque, with his building made of envelopes.

Then the Cancelation of the FDC includes in his design the "Qatar National Convention Centre", the builiding where the U.P.U. Congress took place.

The "Qatar National Convention Centre", was inaugurated on 2012, just a few month before the U.P.U. congress started.

And interesting aspect of the design of this convention centre is the impressive façade inspired by the branches of the Sidra tree.

The Sidra tree was traditionally the meeting place for Qatari scholars and poets.

The main topic of this stamp is the commemoration of the Heritage Day.

The Heritage day is an anual commemoration usually celebrated in October, in which many historical buildings are opened for visitors, and also multiple events take place on that day to make more available the national heritage to citizens and tourists.

Every year one subject is chosen to be the Heritage Day main theme. As in 2012 the motif was Language, the post office decided to honor the indigenous, the natives of Uruguay, because of his contribution of many words to the spanish dialect spoken in this country. The word "Uruguay" itself is a native word that means: "Bird's river" or "Snail's River".

Also honored in this stamp is Aníbal Barrios Pintos, an historian born in Minas, a city in Lavalleja, Uruguay, on November 8th of 1918, that dedicated his life to the study of the people of Uruguay, and published over 10 books, including: "Los aborígenes del Uruguay - Del hombre primitivo a los últimos charrúas" in which he talk about uruguayan indigenous. He passed away on June 1st of 2011.

Then, to show the native people, an sculpture is used. This sculpture was performed by three uruguayan sculptors: Edmundo Prati, Gervasio Furest Muñoz y Enrique Lussich, and is called "Los Charruas", that is the name of the native people more associated to the uruguayan culture.

The sculpture is made of bronce, over a basement of pink granite, and shows who are remembered as the last Charruas: Senacua Senaqué, Vaimaca Pirú, María Micaela Guyunusa with a little girl in her lap, and Laureano Tacuabé Martínez.

Finally, another topics that could be considered are: For Astronomy, The Sun, as the logo of the Heritage Day, the Tie, for clothes, and perhaps the gray hair or white hair.

FDC:

The Cancelation of the FDC includes in his design only a Typewriter, the one which Aníbal Barrios Pintos used to write his books.

Although not confirmed, the Typewritter shown in the First Day Cancelation, is the Hermes Baby.

And Hermes, was an Olympian God in Greek Religion and Mithology, then identified with the Roman God Mercury, in both cases being the patron of the Commerce.

This stamp was issued in commemoration of the 150 Years of the city of “Nueva Helvecia”, also known as “Colonia Suiza”.

This city is located in the department of “Colonia”, about 120 kilometers (75 mi) west of Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, and the date of its foundation is considered to be April 24th of 1862, because is the date when the main group of its first habitants arrived there, most of them coming from Switzerland.

From the beginning, the industry of milk related products was developed in “Nueva Helvecia” and its surroundings, making this city specifically and the department “Colonia” too, in which it is placed, as the major supplier of milk, cheese, and other milk related products, for domestic market and also for export.

This industry is represented in the design of the stamp in two ways.

The first is showing a specimen of Holsteins cattle, also called Holstein-Friesian cattle or Friesian cattle, that is known as the world's highest-production dairy animal, principally for it milk production that could reach the 20.000 L of milk in his life.

The second is presenting the most representative product of this industry elaborated in this zone, and also a product usually joined with Switzerland, that is the cheese. This product is shown in the foreground with two moulds, and also in the background showing the characteristic large holes called “eyes” of the Emmental type of cheese.

Also in the design of the stamp is the logo of the anniversary, that contains a sculpture called “El Surco” (that in English mean: “The Groove”), that is also called “A los fundadores de Colonia Suiza” (that in English mean: “To the founders of Colonia Suiza”), and was inaugurated on 1944. So the stamp could be also useful for Art Collections.

This sculpture was made by the Italian sculptor Arístides Bassi, born in Crémona on April 14th of 1875, and passed away in Montevideo in 1942.

The sculpture is placed in the center of the square called “Plaza de los fundadores” (that in English mean: “Square of the founders”), that was designed by the Architect Luis Mazzini.

Related to the sculpture, some topics could be spotted, the first comes from what it express, that is the effort or the hard work. Also, it is about agriculture, and the early technology applied to it, as it is the plow the tool that the two workers are pulling.

Also, as the logo of the anniversary has the Flag of Uruguay ( Next ) , and the Flag of Switzerland, the stamp it also could be placed in collection of Flags ( Previous / Next ) topic.

And then, inside the flags, in the Uruguayan flag, the Sun ( Next ) , the main astronomical object of our Solar System, it is presented, so Astronomy ( Next ) topic is in the stamp too.

And in the one from Switzerland, the bold equilateral cross appears in the design.

Finally, some other topics to enumerate, this are Fluids ( Next ) , because of Milk, also Vegetables, specially Grass, and the milk recipient shown could be useful for Recipients Topic, or some Metallurgy Topic, or even Chemistry Topic.

Then, the FDC of this Serie shows the Coat of Arms of Nueva Helvecia, so it could be useful for a Coat of Arms Collection.

Then, inside the Coat of Arms of Nueva Helvecia you can spot other topics too.

In the top-left cuadrant, it is represented a very peculiar tank of water, that is an icon of the city because of it refined architecture.

In the top-right cuadrant, in a very abstract way it is shown a sailboat, useful for ship collections, the sun, already mentioned in the stamp, water, and some sea gulls, that fit in birds collections.

In the bottom-left cuadrant, there is the milk recipient that is shown in the stamp, and a branch with some leaves of some unidentified plant.

In the bottom-right cuadrant, an unidentified building is shown, with probably the moon in the background.

In the center it shows the Coat of Arms of Switzerland.
