Issue:
As Main Topic: could be
considereded Philately
itself, or History of
Philately, perhaps also Classical Stamps,
and inside that topics, in particular Uruguayan History of Philately,
and Uruguayan Classical
Stamps.
Then, surrounding the main topic, could be found the
followings: Undoubtely the Coat of Arms Uruguay,
as is the Main Topic of the Classical Stamps whose anniversary is
commemorated, and with this the wider Coat of Arms topic
too.
The Coat of Arms of
Uruguay
is popular in the world of Philately
because it has in his escutcheon
items that fit in Collections with a high number of followers, surely
being the Lighthouses
the most looked for one, as it has the Lighthouse of the "Cerro de
Montevideo" in it. The others are Horses, Cows, Ox or a wider Animals or Farm Animals, and
even Scales
and a wider Instruments
of Measure
are Topics that the escutcheon of the Coat of Arms of Uruguay
has.
Besides these direct Topics related to the items in the stutcheon,
there are also
the Topics that these items symbolize, that are: Power or Strength, by the Fortress, then, Liberty by the Horse, Abundance by the Ox, and finally Equality and Justice by the Scale.
However, not only in his escutcheon one could find topics, outside it
there are some more like: The
Sun, or Stars,
both inside a wider Space
or Astronomy,
and in particular this Sun, The "Sun of May", a
national emblem of Argentina
and Uruguay, that
also appears in some other flags, has his root in the French Revolution,
the Freemasonry,
and even in the Christianism.
Then, outside the estutcheon too, there are two branch with leaves, one
of Laurus nobilis,
an aromatic evergreen Tree
or large Shrub
with green, glossy leaves,
native to the Mediterranean region, one of the plants used for bay leaf
seasoning in cooking, known as Bay
Laurel, Sweet
Bay, Bay
tree (esp. United Kingdom), True Laurel, Grecian Laurel, Laurel Tree or
simply Laurel,
and the other one of Olive
or Olea europaea,
a species of small Tree
in the family Oleaceae, found in much of
Africa, the Mediterranean Basin from Portugal to Israel, the Arabian
Peninsula, and southern Asia as far east as China, plus the Canary
Islands, Mauritius and Réunion, species cultivated in many
places
and considered naturalized in France, Corsica, Crimea, Egypt, Iran,
Iraq, Syria, Java, Norfolk Island, California and Bermuda, so it fit
also in Flora
or Vegetables
Topic.
Then, in particular, the Coat of Arm of Uruguay included in The "Escuditos"
Stamps, was the first version of it that also includes many Flags of Uruguay, a Caduceus, the staff
carried by Hermes
in Greek Mythology,
the same staff was also borne by heralds in general, for example by
Iris, the messenger of Hera, a short staff entwined by two Serpents, sometimes
surmounted by Wings,
also has Swords,
Canyons, and
a Trumpet,
so Weapons,
Musical Instruments,
and Military
were topics included in it design too.
As an anecdote, the stamps being commemorated with this Special
Cancelations, The
"Escuditos", in english,
Little Coat of Arms, are known as the First stamps worldwide in the
Lighthouse Topic, making the Lighthouse of the "Cerro de
Montevideo" the First
Lighthouse to be shown in a Stamp, and surely The one that has been included
more times in stamps,
as there are hundred of stamps issued by Uruguayan Post Office that
includes the Coat of Arms of Uruguay in his design, and also there are
many more stamps that includes the "Cerro
de Montevideo" in it, as it is a Traditional View of Uruguay.
In the same way, it would be interesting to know if these
stamps, The
"Escuditos",
are
also the first stamps in the other topics mentioned, as being issued on
April 13th, of 1864, they have a high probability to be the first in
most of these topics.
Finally, another topic that could be spotted is the 150th Anniversary.
Now, regarding the desing of the Special Cancelation:
As the Cancelation consists only in a reproduction of the "06
centésimos" value
of The "Escuditos"
Series, and some Legends about the Anniversary, it
neither add new Topics nor reinforces any of the Topics previously
mentioned.
Finally, in a more symbolic way:
The decision of release this Special Cancelation, not only guide us to
the History of Uruguayan
Philately, that also made us to review the History
of Uruguay. Then, the Coat
of Arms always evokes Nacionalism, could
be Miltiaria
too, and of course Heraldry.
Stamps selection:
The stamps selected were: a stamp
released in 2006 about the 150th
Anniversary of the First Uruguayan Stamp, and then a
series of two stamps issued in 2002 commemorating the Bicentenary of the Lighthouse in
the "Cerro de Montevideo".
The reason for selecting these stamps was:
inspired by two completely different things.
For the first, the selection of the Stamp is aproached by the Philately Topic, and
through this vision, the existence of a Stamp that commemorate also the
150th Years
of another Classical
Stamp
was very convenient to make a consistent stamp choice for this
cancelation.
The second one selection is guided from the optic of the
most popular topic in the Special Cancelation Release that is the Lighthouses Topic.
So, following this guide, the beautiful two stamp series of 2002 about
the Bicentenary
of the same Lighthouse
that is included in the Coat of Arms of Uruguay shown in the
Cancelation, was a nicely connected serie to decorate the cover for
this Special Cancelation.
The selection of this stamps, add the following
topics: The first clearly reinforces Philately, and Classical Stamps, as
it shows the first Series of Stamps of Uruguay known as the "Diligencias" Stamps,
also helps to strength Sun
and "Sun of May"
Topic, because the main design of these Classical stamps is the "Sun of
May", then, as the "Diligencia" means Stagecoach, not only
includes this Topic, with the wider Transports
also, that it reinforce the Horse
Topic too. Finally, another Minor topic that is reinforced is 150th Anniversary
too.
Then, the second series reinforces intentionally the Lighthouse Topic,
and in particular the
Lighthouse of the "Cerro de Montevideo" Topic. Then it
adds the Bicentenary
topic, also Soldiers
and Weapon
Topics are added because they appear in the first Stamp of the Series,
both reinforcing Militaria
Topic. Finally the second stamp of the serie reinforces the Uruguayan Coat of Arms Topic,
as it appears over the door of the Lighthouse,
strengthening all the Topics that this Coat of Arms has, as
already mentioned in previous paragraphs.
If you consider that there are another topics in
this
stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling
me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would
appreciate your help very much.
