Scientific Classification:

Kingdom : Animalia

Species :
A. Holosericeus

Description:

The Scarlet-headed blackbird (Amblyramphus holosericeus) is an icterid bird of southern South American wetlands.

This species is about 24 cm long. The bill is oddly shaped: long, slender, and very sharp, looking almost upturned. Adults of both sexes are described by their name. Juveniles have entirely black plumage; orange-red feathers first appear on their breast and throat, later spreading to the neck, head, and thighs. The song is given as "loud, clear, and melodic, a ringing 'cleer-cleer-clur, clulululu'." Calls are simpler but have a similar quality.

Scarlet-headed blackbirds occur in pairs in large reed beds in southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina; Bolivia has an isolated population at altitudes up to about 600 m. They often perch conspicuously on top of stems. They are uncommon, particularly away from the coast.

They eat mainly fruit, supplementing it with seeds and invertebrates, especially insects. They use their bill as a hammer to open food items.

Scarlet-headed blackbirds are monogamous, and territories are grouped together. The nest is an open cup placed in the crotch of a shrub or woven into vegetation, in which they lay two eggs.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Painters, in particular the Uruguayan Painters, and among them, the ones selected this year for this annual issue of National Painters, that are: Federico Sáez and Anhelo Hernandez.  Also undoubtely Art Topic is included too, in particular Paintings and Uruguayan Paintings, and also Art Noveau, as both Artist could be included in that category.

Carlos Federico Sáez (14 November 1878, Mercedes - 4 January 1901, Montevideo) was an Artist from Uruguay. He was born into a wealthy family in the city of Mercedes in western Uruguay. By the age of 13 he was producing outstanding paintings and drawings. In 1891 he moved to Montevideo to study with the painter Juan Franzi. The well-known painter Juan Manuel Blanes recommended that Sáez go to study in Italy, which was a fairly common practice for wealthy young artists in Uruguay at that time. The national government provided him with an art scholarship at just 14 years of age. He spent the next seven years in Rome. He entered the Academy of Fine Arts in 1893, but was interested in new artistic movements such as the Macchiaioli and Art Nouveau. In 1896 he set up his own atelier in the Via Margutta, offering a number of shows. In 1900 he fell ill and returned to Montevideo where he died shortly after at the age of 22.

Sáez painted mainly Portraits. His work is characterised by Loose Brush Strokes that still convey a Realistic Precision. While he was in Italy he painted a number of portraits where the canvas is left visible - a technique used in Abstract Art, and which was not seen elsewhere until 1910. In his short career he produced more than 70 oil paintings and 100 drawings. He is considered one of the principal Uruguayan artists and the first to produce truly modern art.

Anhelo Hernández Ríos (Montevideo, Uruguay, 1922-2010) Artist, Researcher and Professor of Uruguay. He was born on November 21, 1922. Between 1935 and 1941, he studied sculpture and drawing with Alberto Savio, a disciple of Aristide Maillol. In 1941, he entered the School of Applied Arts and studied with Antonio Pena, Edmundo Pratto and F. Moller De Berg. In 1942 he became a student of the newly formed National School of Fine Arts and attended the workshop of the sculptor Severino Pose. In late 1942 he joined the workshop of Joaquín Torres García, of which it was part until the master's death in 1949. In 1969 he won on a competitive grant from the Union of Artists of Uruguay to study and work at the School of Art Berlin where his mentor was Professor Arno Mohr

Then, looking more at the desing of the Issue, each Stamp shows a Painting of each of the Artist, and the Topics that appears in each one are very different. In the first stamp, the Painting "El Chal Rojo", that in English means "The Red Shawl", shows a Portrait of a wealthy young lady wearing that Clothing Adornment, the Shawl, that give the name to the Painting.

The second Painting is called "Eros and Psique", in which, although the representation is quite Abstract, it main elements is a barely Nude Androgynous Couple Hugging and probably Kissing, surrounded by a kind of Constructions that reminds a Suburb.

Finally, a few more Topics could be add, as Paintbrush, and Palette, because of the icons that shows the ink colours used in the printing of the Block, and also Sun, Astronomy, Maps, and Maps of Uruguay as they appear in the FDC Cancelation.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Olympic Games, or a a wider Sports, or in particular the XXX Olympic Game London 2012.

The 2012 Summer Olympics, formally the Games of the XXX Olympiad and commonly known as London 2012, was a major international multi-sport event celebrated in the tradition of the Olympic Games, as governed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It took place in London, United Kingdom and to a lesser extent across the country from 25th of July to 12th of August 2012. The first event, the group stage in women's football began on 25 July at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, followed by the Opening Ceremonies on 27th of July. More than 10,000 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated.

Following a bid headed by Former Olympic Champion Sebastian Coe and Then-Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, London was selected as the host city on 6th of July of 2005 during the 117th IOC Session in Singapore, defeating bids from Moscow, New York City, Madrid and Paris. London was the first city to host the Modern Olympic Games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948.

The Games received widespread acclaim for their organisation, with the volunteers, the British military and public enthusiasm praised particularly highly. The opening ceremony, directed by Danny Boyle, received widespread acclaim throughout the world, particular praise from the British public and a minority of widely ranging criticisms from some social media sites. During the Games, Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time, winning his 22nd medal. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei entered female athletes for the first time, so that every currently eligible country has sent a female competitor to at least one Olympic Games. Women's boxing was included for the first time, thus the Games became the first at which every sport had female competitors.

These were the last Olympic Games under the IOC presidency of Jacques Rogge, and the Medal Table was won by United States, followed by China, and Great Britain.

Then, looking more at the desing of the Issue, many Topics arise, mostly related with Sports, however it also appears Architecture and Tourism, as many Typical Views of London are shown in the Design besides the Sportsmen chosen to be honored with Stamps in this Release.

Starting with Sports, from the eight in which Uruguay participated on this Olympic Games, only four were chosen to be present, one on each stamp of the Series. The selected ones were: Football, Cycling, Laser Sailing, and Atlethics, and the Sportsmen chosen in each Sport were: Luis Suarez, actual Striker of the National Team of Uruguay and the Barcelona Futbol Club, that also played in great Football Teams as Liverpool from England and Ayax from Holland. Then Jorge Soto in Cycling, Alejandro Foglia in Laser Sailing, and finally Deborah Rodriguez in 400 m Hurdles Atlethics.

Although only the Four previously mentioned Sports appears in the stamps, in the complete desing of the release, Sixteen are shown, as on the margins of the Block, two stripes of Icons with Draft Representations of Sports are placed, and these include the following Sports: Basketball, Waterpolo, Fencing, Tennis, Rowing, Football, Wrestling, Boxing, Taekwondo, Canoeing, Gymnastics, Equestrian, Shooting, Cycling, and Field Hockey.

Then, as noted previously, many Typical Views of London are shown in the Design of the Stamps. These Views are:

The Arcelormittal Orbit,  a 114.5 metre tall Sculpture and Observation Tower in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. It is Britain's largest piece of public art, and is intended to be a permanent lasting legacy of London's hosting of the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, assisting in the post-Olympics regeneration of the Stratford area.

Orbit was designed by Turner-Prize winning artist Sir Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond of Engineering Group Arup. Announced on 31 March 2010, it was expected to be completed by December 2011. The project came about after Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell decided in 2008 that the Olympic Park needed "something extra". Designers were asked for ideas for an "Olympic tower" at least 100 metres (330 ft) high, and Orbit was the unanimous choice from proposals considered by a nine-person advisory panel.

The project was expected to cost £19.1 million, with £16 million coming from Britain's richest man, the Steel Tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, Chairman of the ArcelorMittal Steel Company, and the balance of £3.1 million coming from the London Development Agency. The name "ArcelorMittal Orbit" combines the name of Mittal's Company, as chief sponsor, with "Orbit", the original working title for Kapoor and Balmond's design.

Then, the St Paul's Cathedral, an Anglican Cathedral, the Seat of the Bishop of London and the Mother Church of the Diocese of London. It sits on Ludgate Hill, the highest point of the City of London. Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. The present church, dating from the Late 17th century, was designed in the English Baroque Style by Sir Christopher Wren. Its construction, completed within Wren's lifetime, was part of a major rebuilding programme in the City after the Great Fire of London.

The cathedral is one of the most famous and most recognisable sights in London. Its dome, framed by the spires of Wren's City churches, dominated the skyline for 300 years. At 111 m. high, it was the tallest building in London from 1710 to 1962. Its dome is among the highest in the world. St Paul's is the second largest church building in area in the United Kingdom after Liverpool Cathedral.

St Paul's Cathedral occupies a significant place in the national identity. It is the central subject of much promotional material, as well as images of the dome surrounded by the smoke and fire of the Blitz. Important services held at St Paul's have included the funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill; Jubilee celebrations for Queen Victoria; peace services marking the end of the First and Second World Wars; the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer, the launch of the Festival of Britain and the thanksgiving services for the Golden Jubilee, the 80th Birthday and the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.

In the third stamp you can see The Tower Bridge (built 1886 – 1894)  is a Combined Bascule and Suspension Bridge in London. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and has become an iconic symbol of London. Tower Bridge is one of five London bridges now owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. It is the only one of the Trust's bridges not to connect the City of London directly to the Southwark Bank, the northern landfall being in Tower Hamlets.

The bridge consists of two Bridge Towers tied together at the upper level by two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal tension forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical components of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's present colour scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee. Originally it was painted a mid greenish-blue colour.

The last stamp is dedicated to the Big Ben Clock, and the Parliament Palace, where Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the Clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and often extended to refer to the Clock and the Clock Tower.

The Tower is officially known as the Elizabeth Tower, renamed as such to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II (prior to being renamed in 2012 it was known simply as "Clock Tower"). The tower holds the Second Largest Four-Faced Chiming Clock in the world (Minneapolis City Hall being the largest). The tower was completed in 1858 and had its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. The tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and is often in the establishing shot of films set in London.

Finally, Maps, and in particular Maps of the United Kingdom Topic could be added, as a small iconic one appears as the colour proof at the right-bottom corner of the Block.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.

Then, looking more at the desing of the Issue, another Sport could be found, as it is Athletics, in particular Hammer Throw, one of the four throwing events in regular Track and Field Competitions, along with the Discus Throw, Shot Put and Javelin, as a picture of Darwin Piñeyrua, and his name, appears in the right corner of the Stamp. This Athlete, that was born professionally in the Club this release in honouring, has the actual National record of Uruguay in Hammer Throw, obtaining it in 1974, and still not beated up. In his career, he participated and was the Flag Bearer in the Olympic Games of Munich 1972, and won medals in the Panamerican games of Cali, winning the Bronze Medal there, and being also the best of South America, with his marks only under United States Athletes.  He also won two Gold Medals and one Bronze Medal in several South American Championship of Athletics.

The connection to Basketball is reinforced in the Release by the design of the FDC of this Issue, as it shows a Basketball Hoop and Backboard, covering most of the cancellation.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Although it was issued to Celebrate a new year of uninterrupted Diplomatic Relationship between Egypt and Uruguay since 1932, whose natural Topic is International Diplomacy, or Diplomatic Relationships, both Content and Design of the Release made us conclude that Egyptology and Music, were clearly the Topics in which this Issue has his Focus on.

The Content of this Release is clearly directed to Ancient Egyptian History, perhaps more specificaly in it Religion and Culture, as it commemorates the 125th Anniversary of the presence of the ESO ERIS Mummy in Uruguay. This Mummy was donated, by the Uruguayan Engineer Luis Viglione, to the National Museum of Natural Arts, in 1890. Studies indicate that the Mummified Body dates from between 664 and 525 BC. ESO-ERIS was a Priestess of the Temple of God Min, in the city of Akhmim, where during Religious Ceremonies ran a Musical Instrument called Sistrum, and in this Role of ESO-ERIS it is implied the relationship with Music Topic, which will be clearly reinforced also by the Design.

Then, looking more at the desing of the Issue, besides that all Elements in the Release are connected with Egyptology, the foucus is put in the Topic Music, honouring the Role of ESO-ERIS, and other Priestesses of the Temple of God Min, which this connection between Music and Religion, put them in the Highest Status in Ancient Egyptian Culture.

The connection with Music in the Design are two, both Related in particular with Musical Instruments. One is made by the First Stamp, that shows a Sistrum, a Musical Instrument of the Percussion Family, chiefly associated with Ancient Iraq and Egypt, that consists of a Handle and a U-shaped Metal Frame, made of Brass or Bronze and between 30 and 76 cm in width, that, when shaken, the small rings or loops of thin metal on its movable crossbars produce a sound that can be from a Soft Clank to a Loud Jangling. Its name in the Ancient Egyptian language was Sekhem (sḫm) and Sesheshet (sššt). Sekhem is the simpler, Hoop-like Sistrum, while Sesheshet (an onomatopoeic word) is the Naos-shaped one.

The second connection to Music, is done outside the Stamps, in the Block decoration, as the Main Scene represented in the Block is a group of three Priestesses of the Temple of God Min running different Musical Instruments during a Religious Ceremony. The Musical Instruments shown in this Scene seems to be some similar, when reading the Design from left to right, to the actual ones: Flute, Guitar, and Harp, however, the precise name of these Musical Instruments it is not said in the Design.

Also from this Scene other Topics arises, the most related one could be Ancient Egyptian Clothes, as the Block shows how the Priestesses of the Temple of God Min usually were dressed in. As in these Ceremonies, Priestesses used to wear Semi-Transparent Clothes or being barely NakedNudes or Female Nudes, could be included as Topics of this Issue too, and finally, Earrings, Jewlery, Dresses, and Wigs, are Topics that also are related to this Release through this Scene.

Then, the Background of the Block includes in a clever way the Texture of the Linen, a Textile made from the Fibers of the Flax plant, Linum usitatissimum. Linen is laborious to manufacture, but the fiber is very absorbent, and garments made of linen are valued for their exceptional coolness and freshness in hot weather, that it is why Linen was the most common textile in Ancient Egyptian Culture, and also the only one not forbidden in Temples and Sanctuaries.

The last Topics included by the Block, are a minor and possible Arabic Characters, and another way more Popular as it is Flags, as the Block Design includes in it Right-Top Corner both, the Flag of Egypt, and the Flag of Uruguay. The Flag of Egypt is a tricolour consisting of the three equal horizontal red, white, and black bands of the Arab Liberation Flag dating back to the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, and the flag bears Egypt's National Emblem, the Eagle of Saladin centered in the white band. So, besides much of Arab History is include in the Flag, also Birds, and Eagles or Birds of Prey Topics are included too by the Egyptian Flag. Then the Flag of Uruguay includes the presence of the Sun, and with this the Topics Astronomy and Space are linked by this issue, and in particular this Sun, the Sun of May refers to the May Revolution, a week-long series of events that took place from May 18 to 25, 1810, in Buenos Aires, capital of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. This Spanish colony included roughly the territories of present-day Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay. The result was the removal of Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros and the establishment of a local government, the Primera Junta (First Junta), on May 25. It is also claimed that the Sun of May is a representation of the Inca Sun god Inti, and also another view is that is influenced by the emblem of the French Revolution, and that emblem was taken from the Freemasonic representations of the All-seeing eye.

Now, returning to Stamps, more precisely to Stamp Two, which design was not analyzed yet, it clearly includes Mask Topic, and more specifically Funerary Mask or Mortuary Mask. It also, because of the Materials in which it was made, Metals and in particular Gold get related to this Release by the Mask. Then, also Egyptian Hieroglyphs, as some of them are seen in the Mask decoration, so Language, and Ancient Egyptian Art, is included too.

Finally, just a few words about the First Day Cancellation, that it is a nice piece of Art, showing one Architectural Capital specific for the Ancient Egyptian Civilization, that relates this issue to Architecture and also to Columns Topics.
