ARCHITECTURE - LIGHTHOUSES - UNCLASSIFIED

Architecture - Lighthouses

Unclassified

Characteristics:

Scope : All items related with  Lighthouses

Description :

A Lighthouse is a tower, building, or other type of structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses and used as a navigational aid for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways.

Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, safe entries to harbors, and can also assist in aerial navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance and use of electronic navigational systems.

History :

Before the development of clearly defined ports, mariners were guided by fires built on hilltops. Since raising the fire would improve the visibility, placing the fire on a platform became a practice that led to the development of the lighthouse. In antiquity, the lighthouse functioned more as an entrance marker to ports than as a warning signal for reefs and promontories, unlike many modern lighthouses. The most famous lighthouse structure from antiquity was the Pharos of Alexandria, although it collapsed during an earthquake centuries later.

The intact Tower of Hercules at A Coruña, Spain gives insight into ancient lighthouse construction; other evidence about lighthouses exists in depictions on coins and mosaics, of which many represent the lighthouse at Ostia. Coins from Alexandria, Ostia, and Laodicea in Syria also exist.

The modern era of lighthouses began at the turn of the 18th century, as lighthouse construction boomed in lockstep with burgeoning levels of transatlantic commerce. Advances in structural engineering and new and efficient lighting equipment allowed for the creation of larger and more powerful lighthouses, including ones exposed to the sea. The function of lighthouses shifted toward the provision of a visible warning against shipping hazards, such as rocks or reefs.

The Eddystone Rocks were a major shipwreck hazard for mariners sailing through the English Channel. The first lighthouse built there was an octagonal wooden structure, anchored by 12 iron stanchions secured in the rock, and was built by Henry Winstanley from 1696 to 1698. His lighthouse was the first tower in the world to have been fully exposed to the open sea.

The civil engineer, John Smeaton, rebuilt the lighthouse from 1756–59; his tower marked a major step forward in the design of lighthouses and remained in use until 1877. He modelled the shape of his lighthouse on that of an oak tree, using granite blocks. He pioneered the use of "hydraulic lime," a form of concrete that will set under water, and developed a technique of securing the granite blocks together using dovetail joints and marble dowels. The dovetailing feature served to improve the structural stability, although Smeaton also had to taper the thickness of the tower towards the top, for which he curved the tower inwards on a gentle gradient. This profile had the added advantage of allowing some of the energy of the waves to dissipate on impact with the walls. His lighthouse was the prototype for the modern lighthouse and influenced all subsequent engineers.

ARCHITECTURE - TEMPLES - ERECHTHEION

Architecture - Temples

Erechtheion

Characteristics :

Architectural Style : Ionic

Location : Athens - Greece
Owner : Greek Government

Construction Started : 421 BC
Construction Completed : 406 BC

Architect : (may have been) Mnesikles
Sculptor and Mason :
Phidias
Ordained by : Pericles

Dedicated to : Athena and Poseidon

Description :

The Erechtheion or Erechtheum, is an ancient Greek temple on the north side of the Acropolis of Athens in Greece which was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon.

Etymology :

The temple as seen today was built between 421 and 406 BCE. Its architect may have been Mnesicles, and it derived its name from a shrine dedicated to the legendary Greek hero Erichthonius. The sculptor and mason of the structure was Phidias, who was employed by Pericles to build both the Erechtheum and the Parthenon. Some have suggested that it may have been built in honor of the legendary king Erechtheus, who is said to have been buried nearby. Erechtheus was mentioned in Homer's Iliad as a great king and ruler of Athens during the Archaic Period, and Erechtheus and the hero Erichthonius were often syncretized. It is believed to have been a replacement for the Peisistratid temple of Athena Polias destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC.

The need to preserve multiple adjacent sacred precincts likely explains the complex design. The main structure consists of up to four compartments, the largest being the east cella, with an Ionic portico on its east end. Other current thinking would have the entire interior at the lower level and the East porch used for access to the great altar of Athena Polias via a balcony and stair and also as a public viewing platform.

The entire temple is on a slope, so the west and north sides are about 3 m (9 ft) lower than the south and east sides. It was built entirely of marble from Mount Pentelikon, with friezes of black limestone from Eleusis which bore sculptures executed in relief in white marble. It had elaborately carved doorways and windows, and its columns were ornately decorated (far more so than is visible today); they were painted, gilded and highlighted with gilt bronze and multi-colored inset glass beads. The building is known for early examples of egg-and-dart, and guilloche ornamental moldings. The Theory of Mouldings, p22, J.H. Janson 1926, has detailed drawings of some of the decorations.

On the north side, there is another large porch with six Ionic columns, and on the south, the famous "Porch of the Maidens", with six draped female figures (caryatids) as supporting columns. The porch was built to conceal the giant 15-ft beam needed to support the southwest corner over the Kekropion, after the building was drastically reduced in size and budget following the onset of the Peloponnesian war.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Clearly Masonry or Freemasonry, and in particular Freemasonry in Uruguay, and even more precisely the Masonic Lodge "Gran Oriente de Uruguay", whose 25th Anniversary is honoured with this issue.

Freemasonry is a Fraternal Organisation that traces its origins to the local fraternities of Stonemasons, which from the end of the XIV Century regulated the qualifications of Stonemasons and their interaction with authorities and clients. Masons are members of the organization. The degrees of Freemasonry, its gradal system, retain the three grades of medieval craft guilds, those of Apprentice, journeyman or fellow (now called Fellowcraft), and Master Mason. These are the degrees offered by craft, or blue lodge Freemasonry. There are additional degrees, which vary with locality and jurisdiction, and are now administered by different bodies than the craft degrees.

The basic, local organisational unit of Freemasonry is the Lodge. The Lodges are usually supervised and governed at the regional level (usually coterminous with either a state, province, or national border) by a Grand Lodge or Grand Orient. There is no international, world-wide Grand Lodge that supervises all of Freemasonry. Each Grand Lodge is independent, and they do not necessarily recognise each other.

Then, the desing of the Issue is divided in three clearly defined components, two of them sharing the foreground, that are the kind of Coin that is shown at right, and the Sculpture at Left, over a background of a Chess board like Floor Tiles with three different Columns over it, and a full of Stars Sky behind them.

The Coin brings obviously Numismatic Topic to the Release, also Metals and Minerals, in particular Gold, as the most probable Material in which the Coin is made. Then, from the elements in the Coin, clearly the Square and Compass, main Symbols of the Freemasonry, and also Tools of Measurement and Construction. Also the inscription of "Libertad, Igualdad, Fraternidad" included in the Coin, refers to the French Phrase "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité" from the French Revolution, so there is here a link to the France as a Country, and to Democracy, Republicanism, and Liberalism Ideologies.

Then, the Sculpture, besides bringing Art to the Topics of the Issue, it also brings Work, as it is the Topic of the Scuplture, and also Marble, because of the Material in which it was made, and even the Sculptor Angel Ferrari Rocca as the Artist who made the Sculpture that is shown in the Stamp.

Finally, the background of the Stamp links the Release to Architecture by the Columns, to Astronomy or Space, through the Stars and Sky, and Chess because of the Chessboard like Tiles.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Armenian People, the Country Armenia, focused on Armenian History, in particular the Armenian Genocide, as this series commemorate the Centenary of this tragic event in the History of mankind.

Also, this release could fit in Century XX History and World War I Topics, as a rough time location, and the Ottoman Empire, also historically referred to as the Turkish Empire or Turkey, a Sunni Islamic state founded in 1299 by Oghuz Turks under Osman I in northwestern Anatolia, as the perpetuator of this Genocide.

Then, looking more at the desing of the Issue, the focus of it is in The Armenian Genocide memorial complex, also named Tsitsernakaberd, the Armenia's official memorial dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, built in 1967 on the Hill of Tsitsernakaberd in Yerevan, the Capital and Largest city of Armenia, and one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.

This Memorial was designed by Architects Arthur Tarkhanyan, Sashur Kalashyan and Artist Hovhannes Khachatryan. The 44-meter Stele symbolizes the national rebirth of Armenians. Twelve slabs are positioned in a circle, representing the 12 lost provinces in present day Turkey. In the center of the circle, at a depth of 1.5 meters, there is an eternal flame dedicated to the 1.5 million people killed during the Armenian Genocide. Along the park at the memorial there is a 100 meter wall with the names of towns and villages where massacres and deportations are known to have taken place. On the rear side of the commemoration wall, plates have been attached to honor persons who committed themselves to relieving the distress of the survivors during and after the genocide (among others: Johannes Lepsius, Franz Werfel, Armin T. Wegner, Henry Morgenthau Sr., Fridtjof Nansen, Pope Benedict XV, Jakob Künzler, Bodil Biørn). An alley of trees has been planted to commemorate the genocide victims.

Finally, besides the Architecture, Sculpture, Monument, Art, and even Fire Topics that The Armenian Genocide memorial complex, includes, the design of both the Block and the First Day Cancelation, also add a Flower, that it shape and colours, this last one seen only in the block, clearly refers to the Flowers known as Forget-me-nots, that are any one of a number of species of Flowering plants in the Genus Myosotis, being the name of these Flowers and explicit symbolism of objective of this release.

Issue:

As Main Topic: Architecture is clearly the most representative Topic of the Stamp, that could be also included in a wider Arts.

Then, more in particular it Professionals, the Architects are perhaps more clearly the Main Topic of this Release instead of Architecture itself, and in particular the Uruguayan Architects who could be viewed as inside the Association of Architects of Uruguay, Instittution whose Centenary is celebrated by this Release.

Then, surrounding the main topic, could be found the followings: The first is Centenary, then, as Association of Architects of Uruguay works as the Union of Architects, Labour rights and Unions could be also Topics of this Release, and finally, as focus is put in the Professionals, this issue could be related to a Jobs Topic too.

Now, regarding the desing of the stamp: Besides reinforcing the Topic Architecture by showing a well designed Building, it also reinforce it as it is the Headquarters of the Faculty of Architecture, the Building which was selected for the Picture shown in the Stamp.

The Headquarters of the Faculty of Architecture was designed by the Architects: Román Fresnedo Siri and Mario Muccinelli, inaugurated in 1948, and declared National Historical Monument on year 2000.

The Faculty of Architecture is one of the Faculties of the University of the Republic, in Spanish "Universidad de la República" or "UdelaR", State and Free University of Uruguay, the most important, oldest, and largest university of the country, with a student body of more than 80,000 students, founded on July 18, 1849 in Montevideo, where most of its buildings and facilities are still located. Then, Topics as State Education, Free Education, inside a wider Education, are tangentially included in this Release.

The design of the Stamp is completed with the Logotype of Association, that is mainly a Ionic Capital of a Column with a Face Sculpted in it Center, that it could made the Release useful for Columns and Sculpture Topics and even the Ionic Order, and also Greek Culture ones.

The last topics identified are Vegetables or Flora because of the Lawn surrounding the building and one Bush that is also shown in the Picture.

Finally, in a more symbolic way: besides that all Centenaries, specially in a Country relatively young as it is Uruguay, reinforces the History, and in this case the Uruguayan History, Topic. I think that the selection of a Picture of the Headquarters of the Faculty of Architecture, and not one of the Headquarters of the Association being honoured, symbolize the Recognition , Gratitude and Attachment of the Association to his House of Study.

Topics:

Issue:

As Main Topic: I think Football or Soccer Topic will be the selected one, and this in a wider Sports. Then, going the opposite direction, to more precise Topics: Uruguayan Football, Football Teams, Uruguayan Football Teams, even Centenarians Football Teams, and of course the team honoured itself "Institución Atlética Sud América" or "Sud América" too.

Then, surrounding the main topic, could be found the followings: First, the Centenary Topic, and then, going deeper, as the origins of the Club has his roots in the Jewish Neighborhood, Jews could be a Topic related to this release. Then, the Club also has the particularity to be nicknamed "Buzones", that means Mailbox, so Mailbox itself and Post are Topics included in this Issue too.

Now, regarding the desing of the stamp: The Topics that are mainly reinforced are the Mailbox and Post ones, as the stamp shows in foreground an orange Mailbox, as the ones that gives the Club his nickname. Then, in the background a view of the "Barrio Reus", the Jewish Neighborhood in which the Club was founded, is presented, and the particular Architecture of his houses exhibited, reinforcing too the Jews Topic. Finally, the third component on the Stamp Design is the Coat of Arms of the honoured Club, so, besides Architecture, also Coat of Arms, are the Topics added by the Stamp Design.

The Coat of Arms of "Sud América", has the particularity that it is a Triangular Shaped Coat of Arms, that it is not the most common shape of the Coat of Arms, and also, the one presented in the Stamp Design included the legend "1914", the foundation year of the Club, addition that did not exist in the official Coat of Arms of the Club.

Finally, in a more symbolic way: The History of Uruguay could be attached to this Release, specially the Small Stories, the Anecdotes, the Simple Things, that step by step mades the History of any Nation.

Label:

The desing of the Label: Did not add any Topic, only reinforces the Coat of Arms one, as the Triangle Shaped Coat of Arms of Sud América, with the legend "100 Años", are the only two elements of the Label.

Block:

The desing of the Block: Adding a Football Player in action as the icon selected to show the inks used in printing the Block, add this particular view of the Football Topic, and also strengthen it. Also a Ball is shown in this action.

FDC:

The desing of the First Day Cancelation: Mades the same addition of both Football Player and Ball Topics, and the Strengthen of the Football Topic, that the Block does, however, the actions of the Football Players selected in both designs are different, in the Block the player is Dribbling with the Ball, and in the FDC the player is Preparing to Shot the Ball

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.
