TOPIC STUDY - #0002 - VOLLEYBALL SPORT - URUGUAY - VERSION #0002

Volleyball Sport - Uruguay PreviousNext )

Version 2

Topic Description:

Volleyball is a Team Sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. It has been Part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokio 1964 Olympic Games.

The complete rules are extensive. But simply, play proceeds as follows: a player on one of the teams begins a 'rally' by serving the ball (tossing or releasing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm), from behind the back boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the receiving team's court. The receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court. The team may touch the ball up to 3 times but individual players may not touch the ball twice consecutively. Typically, the first two touches are used to set up for an attack, an attempt to direct the ball back over the net in such a way that the serving team is unable to prevent it from being grounded in their court.

The rally continues, with each team allowed as many as three consecutive touches, until either (1): a team makes a kill, grounding the ball on the opponent's court and winning the rally; or (2): a team commits a fault and loses the rally. The team that wins the rally is awarded a point, and serves the ball to start the next rally. A few of the most common faults include: causing the ball to touch the ground or floor outside the opponents' court or without first passing over the net;catching and throwing the ball; double hit: two consecutive contacts with the ball made by the same player; four consecutive contacts with the ball made by the same team; net foul: touching the net during play; foot fault: the foot crosses over the boundary line when serving.

The ball is usually played with the hands or arms, but players can legally strike or push (short contact) the ball with any part of the body.

A number of consistent techniques have evolved in Volleyball, including spiking and blocking (because these plays are made above the top of the net, the vertical jump is an athletic skill emphasized in the sport) as well as passing, setting, and specialized player positions and offensive and defensive structures.

Now, looking at the desing of the Issue, some Topics arises. The first probably is Children Drawings, as the desing of the stamp was made by Melissa Madelen Migliozzi, who was eleven year old at this time and was a student of Sixth grade of the Maria Auxiliadora College of Paso de los toros, a city of the Tacuarembó Department, in Uruguay. Her drawing was the winner of a contest made in the previous year instance of the same festival, Juvenalia '97, and the topic of the contest was "El juego", that means "The play" in the meaning of Children Playing, and the motto proposed by Melissa Migliozzi was "Para ayudar hay que jugar", that in english means something like: "In order to help, play is needed".

Besides this clear relationship with Children Drawing, as the design made by Melissa Migliozzi was two Hands hititng a Ball, clearly in the way that most Volleyball hits are done, this release fit in a Volleyball Collection, and also in a wider Sports Collection too.

Finally, for the Motto selected also Help, Aid, and Solidarity could be Topics of this Issue too.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Sports, in particular the Volleyball, and Basketball Sports, as this series celebrate the Centenaries of both Uruguayan Federations of these Sports, the Federación Uruguaya de Voleybol, and Federación Uruguaya de Basketball respectively. Taking this into account, more specific Topics of this release could be Uruguayan Volleyball, Uruguayan Basketball, and even Centenarian Sport Federations, or Centenarian Volleyball Federations and Centenarian Basketball Federations too.

Then, looking more at the desing of the Issue, at first sight only minor Topics arise, as Balls, with Volleyball Balls and Basketball Balls, also Hands, Nets, Stripes, Basket, Backboard, and the Logotypes of both Centenaries, and the one of the FIVB, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (International Federation of Volleyball) in the Volleyball Ball.

However, the most interesting part of the desing, regarding Topic inclusion, is the inclusion of the Logotype of the International Philatelic Exhibition called "Fin del Mundo", in English, "End of the world", named this way as it is held on Río Grande City, in Tierra del Fuego, a small city in the Southest part of Argentina Country, near the South Pole. That inclusion, besides adding Philatelic Exhibitions, and Argentinian Philatelic Exhibitions, also adds Lighthouses and Navigational Aids Topics, as a Stylized Lighthouse takes most of the Philatelic Exhibition Logotype Design.

Issue:

As Main Topic: It will be Sports for sure. Perhaps the unusual of this release is that the focus is in Amauter Sport, which is not much seen in Philately. Then going to more specific topics, University Sport will appear first, and then the Uruguayan University Sports League itself, as being commemorated their 100 Years of life.

Then, surrounding the main topic, could be found the followings: First, the Centenary Topic, then also an University Topic or a wider Education Topic, and finally  the combination of Sports and more Formal Education that is one teached in Universities, gives as a connection with Health Topic, or Healthy Activities Topic.

Now, regarding the desing of the stamp: Besides reinforcing Sports Topic in as much ways as possible, it also includes a reference to many paticular Sports with Icons that represent them. The Sports shown in the design are: Indoor Soccer, Volleyball, Hockey, Handball, Football or Soccer, Beach Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, and Basketball.

Another interesting inclusion in the ten icons that shows all the activities of the Uruguayan Sport University League is one that is not considered a Sport, as it is not Physical, that is the Game of Chess.

Diving deeper in the Design of the Stamp, the Book in the center could be an item selected for a Topic, or also a connection for a wider Education or Literature Topic. Then, a popular Topic that is Horse Topic, is represented also by this release, in the figure of the Chess Knight that is shown with another Chess Pieces in the Chess icon. Also, in the Centenary Logotype it is shown a Stylized figure of a Man in the act of Run, so, Running or Atletism, although not shown in the Icons as it was done with the other Sports, it is also represented in the Stamp design.

Even more deep, a Parasol Item is shown, and besides that Topic, Beach and Tourism could be infered too. Also, Tennis Racket, Hockey Stick, Basketball Hoop , and Also, all type of Balls are shown in the stamp design.

Finally, in a more symbolic way: I think that the release put the Focus on the Exisence and Permanence of the combination of Physical and Intelectual Activities in order to make a Healthy Life, honouring the existence of this institution, the Sport University League, that althought not being in the Front view of what we know as the Academic Life, managed to Serve, through a whole Century, as a connection of lot of Students between themselves, and with many Sports, Intelectual, and Social Activities, that the University itself it is not able to provide.

Label:

The desing of the Label: Did not add any Topic, only it could reinforce the Ball one, as it includes the Logotype of the Sport University League that has a Ball in it.

Block:

The desing of the Block: Adding a the Centenary Logotype that shows a Stylized figure of a Man in the act of Run, as the icon selected to show the inks used in printing the Block, reinforces the Sports Topic, in particular Running or Atletism.

FDC:

The desing of the First Day Cancelation: Mades the same that the Block does, by including the Centenary Logotype that shows a Stylized figure of a Man in the act of Run, reinforcing the Sports Topic, in particular Running or Atletism, and as it add also the "100" number, also reinforces Centenary Topic.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.
