Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: International Philatelic Exhibition, in particular the one called "Fin del Mundo", in English, "End of the world", named this way as it is held on Río Grande City, in Tierra del Fuego, a small city in the Southest part of Argentina Country, near the South Pole.

Then, looking more at the desing of the Issue, clearly Lighthouses and Navigational Aids Topics appears, as a Stylized Lighthouse takes most of the Philatelic Exhibition Logotype Design.

Regarding the Stylized Lighthouse included in the design, allthough not named, it surely refer to Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse (the French name "Les Éclaireurs" means "the Enlighteners" or "the Scouts"), a Slightly conically shaped lighthouse standing on the northeastern-most islet of the five or more Les Eclaireurs islets, which it takes its name from, located at 5 Nautical mile east of Ushuaia in the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, southern Argentina. This Lighthouse is a popular Tourist attraction, reached on short boat tours from Ushuaia. It is known to the Argentines as the Lighthouse at the End of the World (Faro del fin del mundo), although that name is misleading. The lighthouse is often confused with the San Juan de Salvamento lighthouse on the east coast of the remote Isla de los Estados, made famous by Jules Verne in the novel The Lighthouse at the End of the World, which is actually much further east.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Sports, in particular the Volleyball, and Basketball Sports, as this series celebrate the Centenaries of both Uruguayan Federations of these Sports, the Federación Uruguaya de Voleybol, and Federación Uruguaya de Basketball respectively. Taking this into account, more specific Topics of this release could be Uruguayan Volleyball, Uruguayan Basketball, and even Centenarian Sport Federations, or Centenarian Volleyball Federations and Centenarian Basketball Federations too.

Then, looking more at the desing of the Issue, at first sight only minor Topics arise, as Balls, with Volleyball Balls and Basketball Balls, also Hands, Nets, Stripes, Basket, Backboard, and the Logotypes of both Centenaries, and the one of the FIVB, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (International Federation of Volleyball) in the Volleyball Ball.

However, the most interesting part of the desing, regarding Topic inclusion, is the inclusion of the Logotype of the International Philatelic Exhibition called "Fin del Mundo", in English, "End of the world", named this way as it is held on Río Grande City, in Tierra del Fuego, a small city in the Southest part of Argentina Country, near the South Pole. That inclusion, besides adding Philatelic Exhibitions, and Argentinian Philatelic Exhibitions, also adds Lighthouses and Navigational Aids Topics, as a Stylized Lighthouse takes most of the Philatelic Exhibition Logotype Design.

TOPIC STUDY - #0001 - CHINESE CALENDAR - URUGUAY

Chinese Calendar - Uruguay PreviousNext )

Topic Description:

The Chinese Calendar is a Lunisolar Calendar which arranges the year, month and day number upon the astronomical date. It is used for traditional activities in China and Overseas Chinese communities. It determines the date for the Chinese traditional holidays, and instructs Chinese people in selecting the Lucky Day of a Wedding or Funeral, for Opening a venture, or a Relocation.

In the Chinese Calendar, the Days begin at midnight and end at midnight of the next day. The Months begin on the day with the dark (new) moon and end on the day before the next dark moon. The Years begin on the day with the dark moon near the Vernal Commences. The Solar Terms are the important components of the Chinese calendar. There are one or two, and occasionally three, solar terms within a month.

The present Chinese Calendar is the product of evolution. Many Astronomical and Seasonal Factors were added by Ancient Scientists, and people can reckon the date of natural phenomena such as the moon phase and tide upon the Chinese calendar. The Chinese calendar has over 100 versions, and the characteristics of these versions reflect the evolutionary route of the Chinese calendar. Like Chinese characters, these versions of Chinese Calendar is adopted throughout the Sinosphere. In Korea, Vietnam, and the Ryukyu Islands, the Chinese Calendar was adopted completely. In Japan, the Chinese calendar was used before the Edo period, and the later Japanese calendar used the Algorithm of the Chinese calendar.

The Chinese Calendar is not the official calendar in China (see Minguo calendar for post-1912 History), but plays an important role there. The official name of the Chinese calendar is the Rural Calendar, but people often refer to the Chinese calendar with other names, such as the Former Calendar, the Traditional Calendar, or the Yin Calendar.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: The Chinese Horoscope, or Chinese Zodiac, that is based on the Chinese Calendar, and in particular his Year of the Goat or Year of the Sheep, depending on the region in which the Calendar is used, then, even more particularly, and although not specified in the issue, The Year of the Water Goat, is the one celebrated in this Release.

Also, surrounding Chinese Horoscope and Chinese Calendar many Topics arises. Clearly Astrology. Then, from general to particular, Measuring Systems, Time Measuring Systems, and Calendars. Also, perhaps the more abstract Time itself too. And, of course China as the country, or more in general the Eastern Culture.

Now, looking at the desing of the Issue, it is clear that The Goat, in particular from a wider Farm Animals, Animals or Fauna, is the most relevant topic of the issue. Then Space, Astronomy, or even Stars could be another Topics, as the background selected for the stamp is a Night Sky full of Stars. Finally, Photography, could be added too, as both the Goat at foreground and the Sky at background seems to be extracted from Photographies, and not from Paintings.

Then, the First day Cancelation adds another topic by his design, that is Chinese Characterers, as these Characters are not usual to see them in stamps from western culture countries.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.

It is clear that The Horse, in particular from a wider Farm Animals, Animals or Fauna, is another relevant topic of the issue too, however is barely approached by the desing of the Issue through the Horseshoe Footprint that took almost all the Stamp design. Then, following this line of the release design, Horseshoe could put the Release in Blacksmith Topic, and even Steel, Metals, and Minerals ones, and then Footprint could lead us to Detective Topics too.

Now, another peculiarity from the desing of this release, is the naive way of linking the Lunar Calendar with the Picture of the Lunar Soil even with the Footprint of the Step from the Astronaut at bottom slightly to the left. Although probably controversial the design decision that was made, the result is that it make that this release fit in Space, Astronomy, Moon, Space Flights, Flight to the Moon, Apolo 11, and NASA Collections.

Finally, just add that, neither the Block nor the First day Cancelation, adds Topics to the release.

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: The Philatelic Exhibitions and Numismatic Exhibitions in general, and in particular International Stamp and Coin Exhibition, Shanghai '97, as this is the Exhibition that this release is about. Finally, a more comprenhensive Topics are clearly Philately and Numismatic itself.

Then, surrounding the International Stamp and Coin Exhibition mentioned, Shanghai City could be a Topic too, that adds People's Republic of China Country also, and even a Shanhgai International Philatelic Exhibitions Topic.

Now, looking at the desing of the Issue, many Topics arises, some in a way related with Shanghai City and People's Republic of China Country, like The Dragon that leads to a wider Mythological Animals Topic, then The Flower, probably a particular one, however I did not now which it is, and finally the Chinese Calendar appears, in particular the Year of the Ox, and related with this Zodiac AnimalFarm Animals, Mammals, and Fauna Topics became included in this Relesase. These three items appears just only on the bottom margin of both Blocks.

Then, also in both Blocks margins, this time at top, the International Stamp and Coin Exhibition, Shanghai '97 Logotype is included, however, I am not sure which isthe content or meaning of it, probably a Bell or a Gate, and besides that the Coat of Arms of Uruguay is included too, as in many Uruguayan Blocks of that epoch, giving the realease, not only the Coat of Arms Topic, that also all the Topics that Uruguayan Coat of Arms includes, that are: Lighthouses, Hills, Horses, Cows, Animals, Scales, Weight Measuring Systems, and Measuring Systems.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: The Philatelic Exhibitions in general, and in particular International Philatelic Exhibitions, and more in particular Asian International Stamp Exhibition and Ibero-American Philatelic Exhibitions, as although being the 10th Asian International Stamp Exhibition Taipei '96, the Exhibition that this release is about, it also refers to another International Philatelic Exhibition, the Exposición Iberoamericana de Filatelia Uruguay 1996, or in English, the Ibero-American Philatelic Exhibition Uruguay 1996. Finally, a more comprenhensive Topic is clearly Philately itself.

Another Topic of this Release is Semi-Postal Stamps or Charity Stamps, as it Facial Value is UYP 7 + UYP 3, being the first amount valid for postage, and the second goes to give funds to some project, however I do not know which one.

Then, surrounding the International Philatelic Exhibitions mentioned, Taipei City could be a Topic too, that adds Taiwan Country and Republic of China Country Topic also, and even a Taiwan International Philatelic Exhibitions Topic. In the same way Montevideo City, Uruguay Country and Uruguayan International Stamp Exhibitions could be added as Topics of this Issue too.

Now, looking at the desing of the Issue, many Topics arises, all in a way related with Taipei City and Taiwan Country, clearly Birds, Flowers, and the Chinese Calendar appears, in particular fo this last one, the Year of the Rat, and related with this Zodiac Animal, Roedents, Mammals, and Fauna Topics became included in this Relesase. Also the design includes a Building at the right bottom of the Block, so Architecture Topic could be added too. Unfortunately I have not information about the Bird and Flower shown, however it is clear that both were the ones selected for the Taipei 96 Exhibition Logotype, and also I do not know if the Building in the Design is a well known building in Taipei, perhaps the one were the Exhibition was held.

Besides that, as in many Uruguayan Blocks of that epoch, the Coat of Arms of Uruguay is included too, giving the realease, not only the Coat of Arms Topic, that also all the Topics that Uruguayan Coat of Arms includes, that are: Lighthouses, Hills, Horses, Cows, Animals, Scales, Weight Measuring Systems, and Measuring Systems.

Then going to more specific Topics, Uruguayan Women, or Uruguayan Personalities , and of course in particular the Women being honoured in this Issue, María Bernabela "Belela" Herrera Sanguinetti.

Finally, surrounding the Personality of  "Belela" Herrera some Topics arises. By her profession Teacher, by his studies Sociology, by his work: Politics, Diplomatic Relationships, Refugees, United Nations, Human Rights, and by the places in which she helped, besides her country Uruguay, she is deeply related with Chile, specially in the moment in which Augusto Pinochet assumed power in Chile following a United States-backed coup d'état on 11 September 1973 that overthrew the elected socialist Unidad Popular government of President Salvador Allende. Another countries in which he worked were: Argentina, México, España, Perú, Brasil, El Salvador, Haití, and Sudáfrica.
