This serie of an unique stamp was issued in commemoration of the 100 Years of the "Dirección Nacional de Minería y Geología (DINAMIGE)", that is the Goverment Institute of Mining and Geology of Uruguay, and that is dependent of the "Ministerio de Industría, Energía, y Minería" (MIEM)", that is the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining of this country.

The stamp was issued exactly the day when the DINAMIGE celebrates it centenary, as this institution was founded on October 22nd of 1912

The tasks of DINAMIGE, it organizational structure and it responsibilities were established by Executive Power Decree No. 190/997 of 4 June 1997.

In that decree it main responsabilities were set in: 1) To promote, regulate, control and supervise the exploitation, for economic purposes, of the mineral resources of the country; 2) To regulate and control the activities of prospecting and exploration developed outside the State; 3) To Keep updated the country geoscience and mining information; 4) To Manage the grant for concessions of exploitation.

In the design of the stamp, the focus is in a miner working with his pick, and wearing a helmet with flashlight. And the design is completed with a caricatuized pile of semiprecious stones at front, and a radiance, of the same colour of the stone, behind the worker.

The semiprecious stone of the pile, acording to the colour selected for it representation and the uruguayan production of that kind of materials, surely will be an Amethyst, a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry, and which the best specimens cames from Uruguay.

Finally, the MIEM Logo, resembles the shape of a Flower, however, it was not confirmed that it represent that element of the Vegetal Kindom.

FDC:

The Cancelation of the FDC includes in his design a hammer and a pick, crossing each of its sticks, and surrounded by a circle of MIEM logos.

Coincidentally, or perhaps meaningfull, the design of the cancelation remembers the Hammer and sickle logo of the Communist Party.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.

This serie of 4 stamps it was issued to commemorate the arrival of cruisers to the ports of Uruguay.

At this time, this issue has became a traditional and eagerly awaited serie year by year, as it has been issuing since 2010 regulary, however, it was issued in 2006 the first one, of this 4 series.

The serie is always issued on southern late spring, on october or november, and generally it is issued at the day that the first cruise ship arrives to one of the ports of Uruguay, the day that the cruisers season is proclaimed as inaugurated.

Cruisers arrivals is a way of tourism that has been increasing in Uruguay, and for the year that this serie was issued, almost 250 cruise ships will arive on the ports of "Montevideo", Capital of Uruguay, and "Punta del Este", international most known tourist city of this country.

The desing of this serie, although maintaining the structure of previous ones, it is slightly different, both, in each stamp conception, and in the block conception.

The stamps now are composed by two parts, the one showing the cruise ship, and the other showing a tourist place of Uruguay. In previous issues, there were only one frame, with cruiser at foreground, and the rest as background.

And the change in the block were two. The first is that now it is composed by only 2 series, and not 4, as it was in previous issues. And the second change is that the configuration of the stamps in the block, enable the creation of two kinds of se-tenant versions of this serie, one with all the stamps in a row, and the other with the stamps in a 2 row by 2 columns configuration, that makes 4 different se-tenant available for the serie.

The cruisers chosen for the serie were: The National Geographic Explorer, The Celebrity Infinity, The Grand Celebration, and The MSC Magnifica.

In fact, The National Geographic Explorer, was the cruise ship that inaugurates the season, arriving the 22nd of October, the day the sere was issued.

And, the tourist places of Uruguay chosen to be included in the issue were: The lighthouse of "Colonia del Sacramento", the "Yacht Club Uruguay", placed in the "Puerto del Buceo" Neighbourhood of Montevideo, the "Fortaleza de Santa Teresa" located in the department of "Rocha", and the "Argentino Hotel" placed in the city of Piriapolis.

Finally, another topics could be spotted in all stamps of the serie: Obviously water, or perhaps better named sea, are present in all stamps, and also, vegetal kindom, mainly trees, are in all stamps too.

Stamp 1:

This stamp, divides it desing between the Cruiser: "National Geographic Explorer", and the Lighthouse of "Colonia del Sacramento".

The "National Geographic Explorer" Cruiser, is the newest of the Cruisers from "National Geographic Expeditions", that, as could be guessed, is part of "National Geographic Society".

This Cruiser, offers a rather different service than the rest, and it is intended to a more scientific, naturist, cultural, tourist, as it offer non classic tourist destinations, and it crew is plenty of experts from "National Geographic Society", that share their insights, knowledge, and passion for the region being visited.

The National Geographic Society (NGS), headquartered in Washington, D.C. in the United States, is one of the largest non-profit scientific and educational institutions in the world. Its interests include geography, archaeology and natural science, the promotion of environmental and historical conservation, and the study of world culture and history.

Colonia del Sacramento (formerly the Portuguese Colônia do Sacramento) is a city in southwestern Uruguay, by the Río de la Plata, facing Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It is the oldest town in Uruguay and capital of the Colonia Department.

The Barrio Histórico (historic quarter) section of Colonia del Sacramento is designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Inscribed in 1995, it reference number is 747, and the criteria for it desingation was Cultural (iv), because of being an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history.

It kept changing hands from portuguese crown to spanish crown, since it creation until 1811, when it was taken for the "Liga Federal" by "José Gervasio Artigas", and then, after a new period being ruled by portuguese crown first, and Brazil then, it end ruled by Uruguay since it independence..

The Lighthouse of "Colonia del Sacramento" was built in January 1857, and is located on the coast of the Rio de la Plata in Colonia, Uruguay.

It is a white circular tower, ruins of old building at the foot, with striped red and white dome. It has a unique structure with a square base that reaches the cylindrical lantern, assembled on one of the old towers of the Convent of San Francisco.

Its height is 12 meters, has a range of visibility of 7.8 nautic miles, and the lanthern emits two red flashes every nine seconds.

The energy that he used had changed through time. First the lamp was fueled by kerosene, then acetylene gas, later electricity, and the last change was in 1997 that solar panels were used for energy generation.

The Yacht Club Uruguayo (YCU) is a Uruguayan institution dedicated to yachting. Located in the "Puerto del Buceo", Montevideo, Uruguay.

This Yacht Club was founded in 1906, and originally was based in the Bay of Montevideo, and since 1939 is headquartered at the "Puerto del Buceo".

This headquarter is the stunning building with nautical lines that is shown in the stamp, that is the work of architects Jorge Herran and Luis Crespi, and was inaugurated by President Alfredo Baldomir on 28 October 1939.

Then, the club, added two more locations, first in Santiago Vazquez, and then, since 1987, it is established also in Punta del Este, the most international known tourist city of Uruguay.

The "Puerto del buceo", that could be translated to "Port of diving", is a small bay on the coast of Montevideo.

This bay has great historical significance, in it, landed the English invaders, led by Sir Samuel Auchmuty in 1807. Also here, was fought the "Combate naval del Buceo" in 1814 with the victory of Admiral William Brown, which marked an important moment in the wars against Spanish colonialism. Finally, at the time of the "Gobierno del Cerrito", for this port entered all goods to the country, testimony of that time it is represented by the "Oribe Custom".

Today is an inescapable point of social, sports, and tourism significance. Several prominent buildings, such as the Pan American Building, Montevideo Shopping, and the World Trade Center Montevideo are cut on the horizon of this bay. Also, surrounding the beach is the Armenian Rambla, and in near it the Armenian Square, with its monument honoring the Armenians present nowadays in Uruguay.

Finally, in the desing of the stamp, besides the items already commented, there are many sailboats and yachts, in the port, and also, many palm trees, in a partly cloudy sky.

Stamp 3:

This stamp, shows the Cruiser: "Grand Celebration", and the "Fortaleza de Santa Teresa", a military fortification in the department of "Rocha".

Grand Celebration is a Holiday class cruise ship that is operated by Iberocruceros.

This cruise shipe was built in 1986 by Kockums Varv in Malmö, Sweden for Carnival Cruise Lines as Celebration. The Grand Celebration has 2 sister ships. The Holiday which just retired from Carnival Cruise Lines, joined Iberocruceros in 2010 as the Grand Holiday, and the Pacific Sun operates for P&O Cruises Australia.

The Celebration was retired from the Carnival fleet in April 2008. The Grand Celebration had an extensive refit before re-entering service. The refit included new hull artwork. Unlike her sister ship, retired Carnival ship Jubilee, the trademark whale tail funnel on Grand Celebration was not altered or removed, but only painted over. The Grand Celebration entered into service for Iberocruceros in the summer of 2008.

On the morning of 10 February 1989, the Carnival Celebration collided with the Cuban freighter Captain San Luis, breaking the freighter in half and causing it to sink in 13 minutes.[4] Three crew members of the Captain San Luis, including its captain, were missing and presumed dead. The freighter was hauling cement at the time of the collision, and had been experiencing electrical problems which left it without lights, navigational equipment, or steering. The Celebration remained on-site, rescuing the 42 survivors from the water and transferring them to a Cuban navy ship and tugboat before continuing on to Miami.

It length is 223,37 m., it beam is 28,20 m, and it draft is 7,75 m. It has 10 decks (passenger accesible), a capacity of 1.896 passengers, and it travels at the speed of 40,2 km/h.

Ibero Cruises (or in Spanish: "Ibero Cruceros") is a British-American and Spanish owned cruise line based in Madrid, Spain.

The company was founded in 2007 as a joint subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc and Orizonia Corporation, under the executive control of Costa Cruises Group, Carnival Corporation's European division.

The cruise line is aimed at the Spanish and Portuguese speaking market, and operates voyages in Europe, the Mediterranean, and in South America.

The "Fortaleza de Santa Teresa", is a military fortification located 36 kilometers south of "Chuy" and 305 kilometres northeast of "Montevideo" on Route 9, in the "Rocha" Department of eastern "Uruguay". It lies about 800 metres from the coast at "Playa la Moza", almost half way between "Angostura" (to the south) and "La Coronilla" (to the north), north of "Punta del Diablo" and roughly 4 kilometres northeast of the northeast bank of the "Laguna Negra". It lies within the "Parque Nacional de Santa Teresa".

The fort was strategically located on a rocky outcrop at 58 m above sea level along the Camino de la Angostura, the only way through the marshes to the sea.

On October 6, 1762, a cornerstone was laid at the foot of the foundation and the fort was given the name in honor of Saint Teresa, by the portuguese, however, before finish it construction, it was taken by spanish, and they were the ones who end the fortress and use it for their benefit.

It has the shape of an irregular pentagon, and five angles are finished in projecting bastions. There are five checkpoints for each angle of the pentagon, elegantly constructed in the form of carved stone pulpit.

The perimeter of the fortress measures 652 meters and it occupies one hectare in area.

The walls are massive, built with huge granite masonry, strictly equal in size and perfectly carved. The outer wall is about four feet thick at the base and about two meters, the interior, filling the space between one and another. A solid embankment in some places is up to 7,00 m wide. The height of the outside walls in some places reaches to 11,50 m.

Inside the fortress it lodged a maximum of about 300 men. The interior construction, also of stone masonry, preserved in perfect condition from the colonial era, have been restored with care and replacement roofs added. These buildings are: the flag room and guardia on the sides of the front door, the main, which was formerly the chapel, two large blocks, and the "polvorín", built with huge blocks of granite and the cells.

Once Uruguay was established, it fulfilled its role as a watchtower on the border during the presidencies of Fructuoso Rivera and Manuel Oribe, between 1830 and 1843. During the so-called Guerra Grande in the mid-nineteenth century, it was occupied by Manuel Oribe, but afterwards the structure was abandoned.

In 1895 it was reoccupied as a prison.

In 1921, under Dr. Baltasar Brum, the historian and archaeologist Horacio Arredondo conceived and proposed to restore it and preserve the Fort of San Miguel and the Fortaleza del Cerro in Montevideo. In 1928 his plan was put into practice and the forts were restored.

Since the 1940s, it has contained a museum and been a tourist site; one of the few bastions of the colonial era in America which still survives.

Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, baptized as Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada, (March 28, 1515 – October 4, 1582) was a prominent Spanish mystic, Roman Catholic saint, Carmelite nun, writer of the Counter Reformation, and theologian of contemplative life through mental prayer. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered to be a founder of the Discalced Carmelites along with John of the Cross.

She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered to be a founder of the Discalced Carmelites along with John of the Cross.

In 1622, forty years after her death, she was canonized by Pope Gregory XV and was in 1970 named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI.

Her books, which include her autobiography (The Life of Teresa of Jesus) and her seminal work El Castillo Interior (The Interior Castle) are an integral part of Spanish Renaissance literature as well as Christian mysticism and Christian meditation practices as she entails in her other important work, Camino de Perfección (The Way of Perfection).

Stamp 4:

This stamp of the serie, present the cruiser: "MSC Magnífica", and the "Argentino" Hotel of Piriapolis, a tourist city in the department of "Maldonado", Uruguay

MSC Magnifica is a Musica-class cruise ship operated by MSC Cruises.

The cruise ship is initially operating in the western Mediterranean. However, since this southern season of Cruiser, in 2012, it started to travel connecting the ports of Southamerica, including Montevideo and Punta del Este.

It was constructed by STX Europe in Saint-Nazaire, launched in January 2009, completed in January 2010, and entered service in March 2010, doing her Maiden Voyage on March 9th, from Amsterdam, after being Christened three days before in Hamburg.

It length is 293,80 m., it beam is 32,20 m. It has 13 decks, a maximum capacity of 3.605 passengers, although normally it does not exceed the 2.518, and it travels at the speed of 43,0 km/h.

MSC Cruises (Italian: MSC Crociere S.p.A.) is a division of Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC). It was founded in 1987, and it has its headquarters on Geneva, Switzerland

Originally founded as Lauro Lines by Achille Lauro, the company entered the cruise business in the 1960s, operating two ships, the Angelina Lauro and MS Achille Lauro, both of which met fiery ends. After the Angelina Lauro burnt in the port of St.Thomas in 1979, Lauro Lines, also known as Flotta Lauro, met with bad times, now operating just one ship, the Achille Lauro. In 1985, the Achille Lauro was hijacked by members of the Palestine Liberation Front, and the much-publicised event further dropped passenger numbers. In 1989, Flotta Lauro was purchased by Mediterranean Shipping Company and renamed StarLauro Cruises. In 1994, the Achille Lauro caught fire and sank.

In 1995, the company name was changed to MSC Cruises. MSC Cruises is the fourth largest cruise operator in the world, after Carnival Corporation & plc, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and Norwegian Cruise Line with a 6% share of all passengers carried and cruise revenue in 2012.

The Argentino Hotel is the largest hotel complex in the city of Piriapolis, Uruguay.

It is the result of the vision of Alchemist, Templar, Rosicrucian, and Mason, Francisco Piria, and was designed for 1,200 passengers, by the french architect Pierre Guichot.

In 1920 President Baltasar Brum laid its cornerstone, and it construction has a huge cost, being at that time, one of the most gigantic hotels of South America.

The building is 120 meters wide, 70 deep and has 6 floors. In the ground floor were provided facilities for the use of thalassotherapy, hot and cold seawater baths, calisthenics section, hairdressing salons, manicures and more.

For the furnishing, linen Piria thread brought from Italy, Germany crockery, glassware and furniture Czechoslovakia Austria.

It was inaugurated on 24 December 1930, and now it has 300 rooms, and 56 suites.

With the Argentino Hotel and some palm trees as background, in the design of this stamp prevails the sculpture of a winged lion.

The winged lion is the twenty-fourth degree in Masonry. This lion has found the balance between heaven and earth, that in the lion from the previous grade was missing, so now in him everything in it is strength and vigor. This is because it has fallen from his eyes the band Fatal errors that blinded him, primarily the Pride. Now the lion becomes the bearer of a stern message to the Initiate. Its role is to remove from our consciousness all unhealthy idea, all selfishness, all destructive thought, all absurd pride.

Block:

The design of the block it only include, besides the 2 series, the text "Cruceros 2012", that it is translated in english to: "Cruise ships 2012", and a draw of a ship travelling in the área that shows the colour used in the printing, so there is no addition of topics, except, that the ship in this drawing is throwing smoke, so it could be useful for contamination or environment related collections.

Block Folder:

The block folder shows at it front a beautiful sight of a sunset at the "Puerto del Buceo", the yacht port that appears in stamp 2. This time the picture is taken from the water to the coast.
